Degasser VD / VOD
In the VD system, the bucket is located in the vacuum chamber and is sealed with a vacuum cap. The bucket should be equipped with a porous stopper for mixing with an inert gas. Vacuum is created using steam or mechanical vacuum pumps. During vacuum processing, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen may decrease at different stages depending on smelting conditions. In addition, the VD system can be equipped with vacuum hoppers for alloying materials so that during the evacuation the composition can be adjusted. The advantages of this system are good homogenization and higher yield of suitable products.
For VOD processing, it is possible to take advantage of the fact that under vacuum conditions, decarburization with oxygen occurs prior to the oxidation of chromium and, thus, low carbon content is achieved with a small loss of chromium. When using this system, an oxygen lance is installed over the vacuum cover.
Most production programs require a combination of VD and VOD operations. To this end, mechanical equipment was developed for both operations.
In general, VD / VOD processing provides the following benefits:
- increase furnace productivity
- use of cheaper materials with high carbon content (chrome filling)
- reduction of production costs
- quality improvement
- the ability to produce ultra low carbon grades (ELC) with minimal chromium loss
- achieving tighter tolerances for chemical composition
- more low chromium waste
